Winter 2016

Dear Members,

Happy New Year! I hope that your 2016 is off to a great start.

The New York State Chapter of the ACC and the New York Cardiological Society have already had some exciting changes, including the move to our new headquarters (555 8th Ave., Suite 1902, New York, NY 10018) and the onboarding of our new executive director, Mary Leslie, who many of you got to meet at our Annual Scientific Session.

In December, Downstate Governor Bill Lawson, MD, FACC, provided the welcome at the New York Cardiovascular Symposium in New York City. There were more than 2,000 attendees, half of whom were international visitors. We were extremely proud to play host state to this annual New York State Chapter-endorsed event.

February, as most of you know, is American Heart Month, and we are very interested in knowing about any activities that you have planned or programs/initiatives that you are involved in to promote heart health. Please tell us by sending an email to [email protected].

You may have also noticed that we joined a few new social media platforms. We now have a LinkedIn Company Page that will provide general updates on news and events for the Chapter and Society. We have also created an Early-Career Member Group and a Cardiovascular Team (CVT) Member Group on LinkedIn and encourage you to follow and/or join these if you have an interest in becoming more engaged in your Chapter’s activities. In addition, we created a FourSquare Profile and have given our Facebook page a bit of a facelift. I encourage you to start or join a conversation. We are also pleased to share that we will be re-designing our website and integrating many of our social media platforms into it.

And finally, thank you to everyone who voted in our recent elections. A separate announcement regarding our newest Councilors will be sent at a later date.

As always, we’re eager to hear about your ideas and accomplishments. Please stay in touch by sending your news to [email protected] so that we can share it with your colleagues.

In Service,

Tim Malins, MD, FACC

Chapter-Endorsed NYU Programs

The New York State Chapter of the ACC has endorsed two programs being offered by NYU Langone Medical Center this May. The first, “Dietary Strategies for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction,” will be held Thursday, May 19, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the NYU Langone Farkas Auditorium.

The second, “Advances in Cardiovascular Risk Reduction,” will be a full-day course on state-of-the-art management of patients with cardiovascular risk factors, with a focus on prevention. It will focus on recent clinical trial results with implications in the management of cardiovascular disease risk factors, new developments in PCSK9 treatments for familial hypercholesterolemia, the use of aspirin in cardiac prevention and weight loss surgery insights, and how environmental toxins can affect cardiovascular health.
