Sports Cardiology for High School, Collegiate and Professional Athletes

Course Overview and Learning Objectives:

There is a need for a comprehensive Sports Cardiology education for youth, elite and professional athletes. The overall goal of this course is to assist participants in identifying evidence based and expert guidance for cardiovascular care strategies for the professional and elite athlete.

The symposium will be a one-and-one-half day symposium to gather expert educators and clinicians to discuss best practices in the field of sports and exercise cardiology. The focus will be initially on care of young professional and elite athletes.

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the evolving cardiovascular care and practice management responsibilities of a sports cardiology clinician beyond the care of the elite athlete
  2. Demonstrate appropriate interpretation of an athletic patient’s ECG including use of the new International Recommendations for Electrocardiographic Interpretation in Athletes
  3. Compare and contrast normal athlete variants versus pathologic findings in diagnostic studies such as ECG, imaging and stress testing
  4. Review new sports cardiology specific strategies amongst various leagues and organizations.

Target Audience
The primary target audience is the clinician who provides cardiovascular care, including cardiologists, sports medicine physicians, and advanced practice providers (NP, CNS, and PA) for the professional, occupational, tactical, or recreational athlete. The secondary target audience is other clinicians caring for athletes, including first responders and athletic trainers.

Credit Designation Statement

The ACCF designates this other activity (live virtual and on demand) for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
