Irwin D. Mandel Advances in Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Improving Treatment for Patients with Diabetes

This one-day course will cover state-of-the-art management of patients with cardiovascular risk factors, with a focus on prevention. The morning session will highlight the latest scientific and clinical advances in the management of diabetes, including evidence-based strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients and best practices in the care of hospitalized patients with diabetes. Attendees will hear a research presentation on insulin signaling in the role of FoxO transcription factors. Clinical trial updates will highlight the associated risk between cardiovascular disease and diabetes featuring presentations by investigators from the CHOlesterol Lowering and Residual Risk in Type 2 Diabetes (CHORD) and the Pemafibrate to Reduce cardiovascular OutcoMes by reducing triglycerides IN diabetic patiENTs (PROMINENT) trials.

The course will provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art approach to the management of patients with dyslipidemias including an in-depth review on novel lipid-lowering pharmacological agents and a practical overview for their use in clinical care. Attendees will be educated on use of coronary calcium scoring and ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring as diagnostic tools for cardiovascular risk assessment. The role of genetics and cardiovascular risk will educate clinicians on screening for genetic mutations in lipids and the current state of cardiovascular genetics and scientific studies that further the field. The course will also review endothelial cell gene expressions as a marker for cardiovascular disease risk. In addition to the lectures, attendees will participate in a lunch case conference that will review challenging cases in the management of obesity. During the morning and afternoon panel discussion segments, audience questions will be debated among panel members.

This course will be offered both in-person and live-streamed online.
